Ruth C's Legacy

Ruth Johnson Colvin was a visionary and adult literacy pioneer. In 1962, she founded the non-profit organization Literacy Volunteers of America, now called ProLiteracy Worldwide.

Ruth had a mission to give low-literate adults a newfound sense of self-worth by teaching them to read. She immersed herself in the world of literacy. When no one else would, she found a way to organize an adult literacy movement from her
basement using an old broken refrigerator to store her learning library.

Pro Literacy is now the largest nonprofit adult literacy organization in the country. Ruth John Colvin passed away August 18, 2024, at age 107.

Literacy for Adults in Brevard is affiliated with Pro Literacy and for the second time has
received the Literacy Opportunity Grant to support literacy in Brevard County.

A Recipe for Lesson Planning

Lesson plans begin with the learning objectives for the lesson – what the adult learner is expected to learn and be able to do as a result of the lesson. Objectives help the learner make progress toward the goals they have articulated.

The  lesson plan lists the resources, learning activities, specific instructions, and strategies utilized in the lesson that support the learner’s achievement of their objectives. This learner-center approach creates a more cohesive, intentional learning experience for adult learners.

After class, the tutor annotates the plan indicating what activities they completed, and if they met the objectives. Each lesson assesses the learner’s progress toward their goals. The tutor's notes allow for ongoing tracking of progress and facilitate more effective lesson planning, making adjustments to better align with the learner's current needs and progress trajectory.

The Laubach Way to Reading Series includes separate "Checkups" to be administered upon completion of each book. These Checkups allow tutors to gauge a learner's readiness to advance to the next level. These assessments help determine if foundational skills have been mastered or if more time and support are needed in certain areas. Each skill book has instructions for administering Checkups. More information is available online at: proliteracy.com.

WHY TEACH WRITING TO ADULT LEARNERS?

The pervasiveness of writing in daily life underscores the need to focus on helping adults become confident writers. Through writing, we make our thinking visible. Writing helps us clarify ideas, solve problems, and understand our world. Writing is the currency of the work place. With writing, we can leave our mark on the world.

Resources Chat GPT Use Chat GPT to develop lessons and reading material for learner. There is no need to create an account or log in.
